Weekend wrap up

This weekend was a busy one for me. Friday afternoon I went paddling after work and it was a hard one with only eight guys split between two boats and fighting an east wind back from Kewalos to the buoy at Ala Moana Bowls. The end of practice was the best because of the wave we caught at the inside section of Pops no matter how small the wave is it never gets old.

Saturday afternoon I attended my first comic book convention at the Hawaii Convention Center. I volunteered with the Friends of the Library (FLH) which allowed me admission, $40 for Saturday only, into the event. I promoted the library system's upcoming Summer Reading program and library card app while the FLH volunteer was handing out flyers for their upcoming book sale which benefits the library system. There were lots of cosplayers and I tried to get those with the best outfits to pose in front of my booth with a library card. I was also able to geek out a little and get some comics signed by Chris Claremont and Rick Hoberg and buy several trade paperbacks. It was a fun experience and I definitely want to attend another convention, I'm also sure I'll be volunteering at this summer's FLH booksale.

Sunday I went to Kamehameha Canoe Club's final potluck of the preseason. The club will start their regatta season next weekend and I'm thinking the potlucks on Sundays will slowly fade away because their regatta race days, Saturdays, are very tiring. I would have liked to stay with Kamehameha but the Saturday race schedule conflicts with my work. Anuenue's regatta season starts Sunday June 7th and while I'm looking forward to racing in the club's koa canoe I will miss the paddlers at Kamehameha.

Weekend wrap up

I did my third race of the preseason this past Saturday, the starting point was Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai and ended at Magic Island. It was a fun and tiring race with less than ideal conditions. It was overcast so that was nice but the wind was light and the surf was small so very little surfing for my boat. I got hot during the middle of the race and was very happy whenever I was accidentally splashed by the paddler sitting behind me. The scenery of the coastline was spectacular especially the stretch from Black Point to Diamond Head, this is one race I'd do again in a heartbeat.

May weekend

Saturday was Free Comic Book Day and it was the library's third year of participation in the giveaway program. I ordered 150 comics this year, paid for by grant money from the Friends of the Library, and only 7 were left at the end of the day. This year 4 cosplayers volunteered their time and did a 2 hour appearance at Waikiki-Kapahulu.

I went to the wifey's open house on Sunday it's located on the ridge above the valley we live in so I was curious to see the views from up there.

Thursday out and about

Thursday mornings I start work later so I can take my buddy for a walk and let him run off leash a little too. I've been taking him to Diamond Head for a change of scenery and the walk there seems to give me more of a workout also, I think it's the slope of the beach and the sand is not as packed tightly along the waterline so I sink deeper when I step. Lots of photos in this post everything from maps to house porn.

Monday musing

Monday mornings I usually take my dog for a walk and for the past year and a half I have been taking him to Hunakai Beach so he can go off leash. The last couple of months I have also been taking him to Diamond Head for a change and the variety is good for me too. The length of the walk is nearly the same about 1.75 miles roundtrip but the beach is much cleaner, not nearly as much trash left on the sand by beachgoers. I don't let him off leash for the length of the walk because there are more properties along the shore with no fencing like Hunakai, I don't feel like chasing hm in someone's yard if he gets too curious. One plus of the no or lower fences is I get to see the houses that are setback from the beach. So here are some house porn shots I took, with my daughter's old iPhone 4S, from this morning's walk.

Wednesday Thursday

Wednesday
Mixed novice paddling Wednesday afternoon we went from the launch to the Ala Wai buoy then intervals to the wind sock. I was surprised we continued to the Diamond Head buoy, well almost. The crew paddled a total of 6.6 miles in an hour and 30 minutes with lots of breaks in between.

Thursday
Took Button and Mushu on a walk at Hunakai Beach Thursday morning. At one point Button must have been at least 20-25 yards ahead, Mushu is slow but he did the whole mile and a half walk by himself.

 

Out and about Honolulu

There's nothing like paddling a 400 pound canoe and 800+ pounds of men into a wave no matter what size it is. That's always the best part of practice for me after paddling 6+ miles, the 10 second ride makes it all worth the hard work I've put in for the last hour. I always feel so connected to this place I call home when I'm playing in the ocean.

Good Friday went parasailing with the fam. I was so worried about getting seasick sitting on the boat that I thought I wasn't going to enjoy myself. I took the precaution of taking a motion sickness pill and I think it helped me. I had a great time on the water and the parasailing was awesome not scary at all, it was so very peaceful in the air and the scenery cannot be beat. I'm glad the wifey put this together.
